R112 is a new 3-K school carved from the shell of an existing 31,000 s.f. supermarket located in a small shopping center. NYC’s 3-K schools provide pre-k early education for 3 year-olds throughout New York City. The school’s design was completed on a fast track to meet the New York City mayor’s goal of providing pre-kindergarten seats throughout the city. The design provides 17 classrooms, two recreation rooms, office suite and kitchen. All perimeter spaces have new windows. Interior classrooms and recreation spaces use skylights to provide natural light.
The parking lot was reconfigured to provide a 3,000 s.f. playground, and traffic throughout the site was reworked to ensure pedestrian safety.
